March 19th: Update to Membership
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – March 21
March 21st marks the “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.” It’s always a good day to learn about and how to recognize and fight racism, discrimination, and xenophobia, but this Thursday is a particularly opportune day to educate yourself and others.
Here are four ways that you and others can continue to help put an end to racism and discrimination.
- Speak out against racism, discrimination, and xenophobia when you encounter it. This can be done by calling out racist or discriminatory behavior and language, and by standing in solidarity with those who are being targeted.
- Support Indigenous peoples and racialized and religious minority communities by listening to and amplifying their voices, and by supporting organizations and initiatives that work towards racial equality.
- Encourage anti-racism and racial equality, in all areas of life, including in the workplace, schools, and communities, and promote policies and initiatives that support these values.
- Educate yourself and others about the history and ongoing issues of racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in Canada to increase awareness and understanding of these issues.

Update on Potential February 2024 Raise
Members have been asking about the conditional Feb 2024 pay increase – unfortunately, the outcome has been delayed as we are waiting on information from the Government of Alberta (GoA).
The current Collective Agreement has a provision for a potential 0.5% pay increase that will only occur if a Gain Sharing Formula (based on the average of all private forecasts for Alberta’s Real Gross Domestic Product [GDP] for calendar year 2023) is at or above 2.7%. SAFA has learned that the GoA is delayed in calculating this average of GDP, and therefore will not confirm the annual percentage until closer to the end of March. SAFA expects SAIT Employee Services will share an update once the GoA announces this percentage.
