SAFA Bargaining Update
I apologize for the sizeable time since my last bargaining update.
We met with SAIT for a bargaining session on November 15, December 6 and January 24 (total of 12 times so far). I’ve also met several times – informally – with SAIT’s chief negotiator to get and give clarification on some of the topics that have been discussed at the bargaining table.
We have been able to agree on changes concerning casual sick leave, the use of doctor’s notes, and bringing the collective agreement into compliance with the Alberta Labour Relations Code.
As well, we’ve agreed to a joint committee to review the Benefits Program. This committee would review the benefits program with respect to coverage, effectiveness, sustainability and flexibility during the term of the collective agreement.
In addition, we’re close on a few other topics – disconnecting the Long Service Allowance from the salary grid by removing the Long Service Allowance criteria “Has been paid at the same maximum salary step during the immediately preceding two (2) years”, reducing the probation period, and a Letter of understanding regarding Instructors who may be assigned work outside the Alberta jurisdiction.
Looking forward, SAIT has agreed to discussions on how we can incorporate Scholarly Activity into the Collective Agreement in so far as it impacts workload, professional development, etc. and we continue to negotiate the inclusion of Fee for Service instructors into the SAFA collective agreement.
However, we remain far apart on salary and workload.
As always, please feel free to stop by the SAFA office N201 in the Burns Building or contact me directly – ext. 4067 – or via e-mail [email protected] if you have any questions or comments.
In solidarity
