SAFA Membership Update: October 18th
Hybrid Work Arrangement
With the introduction of SAIT’s Hybrid Work Guidelines, SAFA has fielded a few questions and had some discussions with management around these questions. I thought it would be useful to share that same information with all our membership.
As stated in the Hybrid Work Guidelines, SAIT has an expectation that faculty be on campus a minimum of three days per week, with a common day on-campus to be every Wednesday.
Once your workweek has been established, both faculty and management should work towards maintaining this agreed-to arrangement. Exceptions can be made upon the request of either party. A faculty member may need to switch a regular day on campus for an off-site day for personal or professional reasons. Management may make a request of a change for operational reasons. Either way, this is an anomaly or one-time request that both parties should consider, consult, and be reasonable in their decision-making.
What is not an expectation is having to make-up on-campus time missed due to a statutory holiday or illness. For example, if your regular on-campus days are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and a statutory holiday falls on Monday (which it often does), there should be no expectation from your chair that you “make-up” time on-campus. The same is true for a sick day or a personal day.
The reverse also applies. That is if your regular on-campus days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the statutory holiday falls on your off-campus day Monday, you can’t replace one of your on-campus days with an off-campus day because you weren’t able to work off-site that day.
Let your SAFA representative know how things have progressed with the Hybrid Work Policy. We are happy to have this information and to help resolve any issues that may arise.
