November 28th: SAFA Membership Update
Know Your Collective Agreement: Sections 20 & 21
Did you know that SAIT must provide the supplies, equipment, clothing, and instructional materials that you need to do your job? This applies to all SAFA members, not just instructors in a lab! How could this impact you?
Necessary Instructional Materials
Section 20 of our Collective Agreement states that SAIT must provide all academic staff members with the books, texts, software, and instructional materials deemed necessary by the employer to perform their job. This means that adjunct and casual contract instructors should be provided with complete course shells and learning materials, unless separate curriculum development contracts have been assigned. While salaried instructors may do minor updates to learning materials as part of class management activities, significant curriculum updates should be assigned as professional duty time, off-load time, or overtime hours.
Necessary Equipment, Supplies, and Credentials
Along with learning materials, SAIT should also cover the cost of training (e.g., First Aid, WHMIS), certification, and insurance, for casual and salaried instructors if those activities are necessary to perform their role at SAIT. Optional training or certification activities can be covered through professional development funds, if approved by leadership.
Necessary Clothing
Section 21 of our Collective Agreement specifies that SAIT must supply the protective clothing and safety equipment necessary to perform your work. Additionally, such items will be cleaned and replaced as needed with written authorization by the employer.
If you have questions about what should be supplied by your employer, contact your SAFA representative for more information.
