SAFA Membership Update: May 4th

Position Abolishment Updates

Over the past two weeks, SAIT has been meeting with employees whose positions have been identified for abolishment. These conversations are difficult and deeply personal, and our thoughts are with every member affected during this uncertain time.

SAFA representatives were present at all meetings to support members, answer questions, and ensure the process followed Section 13 of the Collective Agreement.  Per the SAFA CA, positions may be abolished due to low enrolment, the cancellation of a course, section, or program, or other operational reasons. The agreement also sets out the required process that SAIT has followed – first eliminating casual, temporary-salaried, and probationary positions, then seeking volunteers from permanent full-time employees, before finally moving to any further selection process for permanent positions.

A total of 35 permanent positions, along with casual and temporary-salaried positions, are being eliminated.  Nearly 75% of the eliminated positions were the result of voluntary abolishments. Unfortunately, that left several members who were involuntarily abolished.  SAFA continues to work with those members to review their rights, discussion available options, and provide support.

Members in the Schools of Hospitality & Tourism, Construction, Business, MacPhail School of Energy, School for Advanced Digital Technology, and the Academic Services Division were impacted.

We understand that many members, whether directly impacted or not, are feeling stress, concern, and uncertainty right now.  If you have questions about your rights, the abolishment process, or available supports, please reach out to SAFA. We are here to support you.

In solidarity,

Craig Coolahan
