Updates from Across Canada
As fall activities start to ramp up across the country, faculty associations and unions are making the news:
- Canadian postsecondary has seen no labour action this Fall, but there have been 9 successful strike votes taken (University of Toronto, Queen’s University, University of Ottawa, McGill University, Wilfrid Laurier University, Dalhousie University, Lakehead University, UBC, and York University). So far, Toronto, Queen’s, Lakehead, and Laurier have reached tentative agreements with their associations. The other organizations continue to meet at the bargaining table.
- It’s interesting to note that a common issue for the associations currently in bargaining is adding “guardrails” on AI use in teaching. Several have asked their institution to commit to not using AI chatbots or tutors as justification for reducing or replacing work by human staff, as well as seeking the right for faculty to refuse work that involves AI on ethical grounds.
