FAQ – Pandemic
Hello Faculty Colleagues:
I have received emails and calls from Faculty members sharing their concerns about returning to campus. I wanted to share with you an overview of how SAIT plans to handle issues arising from the Pandemic.
Confirmed COVID Case:
You must quarantine and may not attend campus for 10 days after onset of symptoms, or until symptoms resolve, whichever is longer.
You may only attend campus once you meet the requirements of the Daily Campus Access Form.
However, you may work remotely if feeling well enough and remote work is available. But, if you’re unable to work remotely, you should use general sick leave.
If you are not entitled to sick leave, you may take up to 14 unpaid calendar days away without risk to employment and no medical evidence is required
What if I have possible COVID exposure?
Anyone who may have a probable exposure or who have engaged in certain high-risk activities (as defined by AHS) are required to self-isolate. You may only attend campus once you meet the requirements of the Daily Campus Access Form. You may work remotely if work is available. But, if remote work is not available, you may take up to 14 unpaid calendar days away without risk to employment. You have the option to use vacation, without risk to employment, and no medical evidence is required.
What if I have concerns about on-campus work?
SAIT will not force you to work on campus if you are uncomfortable. There are many legitimate reasons for this request, and no medical evidence is required. You may work remotely if work is available, But, if remote work is unavailable, you may take an unpaid leave of absence.
What about masks?
Masks are required in all indoor space. You will be issued with 2 reusable masks. If the standard mask is not suitable, you may purchase a suitable mask and submit as a reimbursable expense (max $100 without preapproval). If you have health concerns or are engaged in an activity where mask use is impractical, you should contact [email protected] for advice.
I have caregiving responsibilities, what can I do?
SAIT wishes to support employees with childcare, eldercare, and other caregiving responsibilities. There are many options available to facilitate you meeting your caregiving responsibilities, including using vacation, special leave days, unpaid days off, a reduced work week, personal & family responsibility leave. Your Dean and Academic Chair should act fairly, reasonably and with empathy to help you through these pandemic challenges. It is likely that there will be disruptions and many situations could trigger human rights obligations and / or a formal duty to accommodate.
I continue to be committed to keeping you informed as we transit these difficult times together. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.
During this time of uncertainty, I encourage Faculty to utilize the available free counselling services of the Employee Family Assistance Program (Lifeworks) – 1-844-671-3327, which is available 24/7.
In solidarity and service to members,
