Frequently Asked Question
Hi Everyone:
I continue to receive inquiries regarding the implementation of the provision for “personal leave days” as contained in the collective agreement, so I thought a quick e-mail to clarify might be in order.
First, there are no restrictions contemplated in Section 35.04 of the Collective Agreement except that two weeks’ notice may be required. This means you can use them no matter if there are students on campus – or not, if you have classes scheduled that day – or not, whether there is someone to cover or substitute for you – or not. Further, when you choose to use your personal days is not at the “discretion” of your supervisor, AC or manager. It is not subject to “office needs”, “operational requirements”, scheduling of “team meetings”, etc.
You have 2 personal days per calendar year.
There is no “carry over” for personal days – in other words “use them or lose them”.
However, you have 2 for 2019 that should be used prior to December 31, 2019.
Then you will have another 2 personal days in 2020 – so you could use them as soon as January 1, 2020.
I suggest you give two weeks’ notice and more if you can, especially as this is new to SAIT.
35.04 The maximum length specified for each circumstance requiring use of personal leave shall not exceed two (2) working days per calendar year. The use of personal leave does not combine with leaves outlined in Section 35.01 and Section 35.02. Personal leave may require (2) two weeks’ notice and shall not require a detailed explanation for the leave.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
Best regards,
Al
