Frequently Asked Question
This weeks’ question is: “How much SAFA PD do I have, what can I use it for and where and how do I access it?”
But first let me clarify that although it is commonly called “SAFA” PD, SAFA does not administer or have anything to do with PD funds except for bargaining it into our collective agreement. The administration of PD funds is done through SAIT in accordance with the collective agreement Section 12 – Professional Development and HR Policy HR.2.2.2 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND – ACADEMIC EMPLOYEES.
If you’re not sure how much funding you’ve used or have available, please ask your Academic Chair.
- Each academic employee (SAFA) is provided with a maximum of $800 on a 24-month basis (inclusive of any taxes) as identified in the Collective Agreement and a maximum of $800 on a 24 month basis (inclusive of any taxes) funded by the vice president, academic, for individual professional development. Commencement of the 24-month period is determined by the academic employee’s start date as outlined in Section 12.05 of the Collective Agreement.
- Pre-approval must be obtained through the completion of the required Application for Professional Development funding and associated AP60 form to access any monies under this program.
- This funding can be accessed in conjunction with other SAIT funding for the same purpose or activity.
- Pursuant to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations, this fund may be a taxable benefit.
- Unused funds are forfeited. (No carry over)
Unfortunately, Professional Development funds are only available to those Academic Staff employed in a salaried position – permanent full / part time or Temporary salaried (after completion of their probationary period).
12.04 The Employer shall contribute an amount such that $800.00 is available over a twenty-four (24) month period for each salaried academic staff member for individual short-term professional development and shall be applied to:
(a) Academic staff members in permanent positions either full-time or part-time {on a pro-rated basis}.
(b) Academic staff members in temporary salaried positions either full-time or part-time {on a pro-rated basis} only after the completion of their probationary period.
