Performance Reviews: A Reminder
Are Performance Reviews Required? What is the Process?
All salaried SAFA members are eligible for a review, as are all casual SAFA members who have completed 1600 work hours. These reviews should occur at least once every 6 months between the academic staff member and their leader. There is no required procedure or form to use, but the process should be a collaborative one between the employee and leader, with academic staff members participating in the creation of a professional development plan, work goals, and a review of outcomes.
Why the Change in Performance Reviews?
In the updated Section 15 of the 2020-2024 Collective Agreement, the language changed from punitive and prescriptive (when and how to do reviews) to more positive and descriptive (focused on the intent and value of the process). Section 15 now states that performance planning and review has the purpose “to provide positive and constructive feedback” to the employee, as well as to ensure the goals of the employer are achieved. There is clear language that a review is not used for disciplinary or probationary processes. As well, annual progression on the salary grid is no longer tied to a satisfactory performance review – salaried and casual employees will automatically advance one step each year.
If you have questions about the performance review process, you should speak to your Manager or Academic Chair to learn what documentation and timeline is used in your area. If you feel that performance reviews are being used in a punitive way, have a talk with your SAFA representative.
