Mid-Term Break Implementation: Faculty Protections Remain in Place
With the full rollout of SAIT’s Mid-Term Break (MTB) policy beginning in Spring/Summer 2025, faculty should be aware of the broader impacts on term timelines—particularly the reduction in final exam week (from 5 to 4 days) and the compressed grade submission deadline (from 3 to 2 days).
While the intention of MTB is to support student wellness, these calendar changes affect academic workloads, especially during the busiest points of the term. We want to remind all SAFA members that:
- You are not required to complete grading outside of your assigned workdays. The compressed grading timeline does not override your workload protections under the Collective Agreement.
- Departments and schools should not impose shorter deadlines than those set by the institution. If you’re told to submit grades earlier than the institutional deadline, contact your SAFA representative right away.
SAFA will monitor how this change is implemented across schools. If you’re feeling pressure to complete tasks in an unrealistic timeframe, reach out—we’re here to help.
In Solidarity,
Craig Coolahan
