Know Your Collective Agreement: Performance Reviews
Performance reviews can sometimes feel like a mystery—do we have them and what do they actually mean? At SAFA, we often hear these questions, especially during times of contract renewal or workload conversations. With the 2024–2028 Collective Agreement now in effect, it’s a great time to revisit what performance reviews look like at SAIT and how they’re meant to function. Here’s a quick overview of what you need to know.
Does SAIT have Performance Reviews?
Yes, section 15 of our 2024–2028 Collective Agreement confirms that performance planning and review remains part of our working conditions. Its stated purpose is “to provide positive and constructive feedback” to employees and to support institutional goals.
Are Performance Reviews Required?
All salaried SAFA members are eligible for a review, as are casual SAFA members who have completed 1,600 work hours. While there is no firm deadline, the CA states that reviews should take place at least once every six months.
What is the Process?
There is no mandated form or set procedure. However, the process should be collaborative, with academic staff members actively contributing to their professional development plan, setting work goals, and reflecting on past achievements.
What are the Impacts of a Review?
Performance reviews are intended to encourage growth and regular dialogue between staff and leadership. They are not to be used for discipline or probation. Importantly, salary progression is no longer tied to review outcomes—both salaried and eligible casual staff advance one step on the salary grid annually.
In short, performance reviews at SAIT are intended to be supportive, collaborative, and future-focused—not punitive. If you have questions about the process or your rights under the Collective Agreement, don’t hesitate to reach out to your SAFA Representative. We’re here to ensure that all members are treated fairly and that the language in our agreement is upheld in practice—not just on paper.
In Solidarity,
Craig Coolahan

SAFA Election Update: All Positions Acclaimed
SAFA would like to congratulate the following members who will be our Academic Council representatives for a term running July 1, 2025- June 30, 2027:
Division I – Carina Butterworth
Division II – Troy Taperek
Division III – Chris Collins
Division IV – Sonia Perna
Academic Council is formed at SAIT under the Post-Secondary Learning Act of Alberta to make recommendations or reports to the Board of Governors regarding academic policy matters, significant changes in courses or programs, and any other issues that impact our institution. This body is made up of representatives from SAITSA, SAFA, AUPE, and management at SAIT, and its work has significant impact.
SAFA would also like to thank the members of our election committee who oversaw the process this year – Teela Kowalchuk, Stephen Barry, and Linda Gardner. This year’s election will not be held since there is only one candidate per position. _______________________________________________________________________________
