SAFA Membership Update: February 24th

Meet Your SAFA Table Officers

We’re continuing our profile series to help members learn more about the union representatives who serve them. These short introductions are meant to highlight the people working behind the scenes at SAFA to answer questions and advocate for members.

Introducing Dan Jones

SAFA Position: Division I Table Officer

Members Represented: School of Construction, School of Manufacturing & Automation, School of Transportation

I’ve been a dedicated instructor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) since 2001, bringing over two decades of experience and leadership to the School of Construction. Specializing in the Sheet Metal Program, I am a red-seal certified journeyman in the trade of Sheet Metal Workers.

Throughout my career at SAIT, I have held a variety of roles, including authoring Individual Learning Modules, serving as the Apprenticeship Faculty Development Facilitator for two years, and stepping into the role of Interim Academic Chair for five months, overseeing the Sheet Metal program and four additional trades.

My education includes an Instructor Diploma from Vancouver Community College and a Certificate in Adult Learning from the University of Calgary. My passion for faculty advocacy and institutional development is evident with my longstanding involvement with the SAIT Academic Faculty Association (SAFA), where I have served on the Table of Officers for nearly six years and on the Executive Council for an additional two.

Pink Shirt Day Is February 25th

The last Wednesday of February marks Pink Shirt Day, an event started in Canada to take a stand against bullying.  Pink Shirt Day encourages us to be inclusive and supportive with our colleagues, students, friends, and family. On February 25th, SAFA encourages our members to wear pink to promote our commitment to a learning community that is safe for all.

If you feel unsafe or bullied in the workplace, please know that supports are available.  SAIT’s Respectful Workplace and Learning Environment Guide (HR.4.10.1) outlines your rights and SAIT’s responsibilities in this area.  If you have any questions or would like to talk about your situation, reach out to your SAFA rep.   We are here to help!
