Saturday Exam Administration: Mutual Agreement is Needed
After last week’s message about Mutual Agreement, we’ve received questions from faculty about the final exam schedule and expectations. The introduction of Fall Break has moved final exams to December 11–16 (Wednesday to Monday, excluding Sunday). As part of this shift, some exams are now scheduled for Saturday, December 14.
Instructors have asked if they can be required to administer exams on Saturday. The answer is NO—you cannot be required to work a Saturday exam without your explicit agreement. If you are approached to administer an exam on this day, it’s essential to confirm in writing what compensation will be provided for your time. Compensation may be arranged as time in lieu, additional CCH hours, or overtime pay, depending on the agreement reached.
Remember, any agreement to work on a Saturday is only recognized if it’s submitted using the Mutual Agreement form and signed by both you and your Academic Chair. An email or verbal request does not provide the same protection or guarantee of compensation. This formal documentation is critical for safeguarding your rights and ensuring accountability.
If you have any questions or concerns about this process or the workload expectations for final exams, please reach out to your SAFA representative. We’re here to support you and ensure fair and manageable working conditions.
In Solidarity,
Craig Coolahan

SAFA Statement on AIMCo and LAPP Concerns
Dear Members,
We know that recent developments at AIMCo have raised questions and concerns about the security of our pensions within the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP). SAFA shares your concerns and understands the importance of transparent and effective management of our retirement funds.
The recent dismissal of AIMCo’s board by the Alberta government is a significant move. We are watching these changes closely and remain committed to advocating for the stability and security of our members’ pensions.
With respect,
