The Power of Collective Refusal
What is the solution? Collective refusal instead of individual, where no one is left behind. For those permanent members who have more power and can ask questions for themselves and others, refusal may look like questioning how contingent faculty are compensated for committee work and projects, asking why important work is not being assigned offload or additional staffing, or calling out the supervisor when they do not follow procedures for vacation, load verification, or mutual agreement (processes that provide transparent and consistent outcomes to protect members). Too, members can bring these issues to SAFA, and we can be the collective voice that says “no”. When we use our voice collectively, we can bring systemic problems into the open and impress upon SAIT the need for solutions to be found through shared decision making.
SAFA will be your voice if you feel you’ve been asked to work outside our current Collective Agreement – contact us at mailto:[email protected] if you have concerns.
